xenolith

Embedded stone stranger

A xenolith is a fragment of rock embedded within a different type of rock.

The term appears in geology when one rock type gets incorporated into another during volcanic activity or other geological processes—a piece of the surrounding bedrock trapped in cooling magma, for instance: The basalt contained xenoliths of granite from the chamber walls.
