scleral buckle

Eye band surgery

A scleral buckle is a surgical device used to treat retinal detachment, consisting of a silicone band or sponge that is sewn onto the outer surface of the eye.

The buckle indents the wall of the eye inward, pushing the sclera toward the detached retina so the layers can reattach and heal.

The procedure has been a standard treatment in ophthalmology since the mid-20th century and the buckle typically remains permanently in place.
