sand timer

Gravity-powered timekeeper

A sand timer is a device for measuring time, consisting of two glass bulbs connected by a narrow neck through which sand flows at a controlled rate.

When all the sand has passed from the upper bulb to the lower, a set interval has elapsed.

Flipping the timer restarts the process.

Also called an hourglass, though most sand timers measure minutes rather than hours: a three-minute sand timer for board games.
