salt pans

Dried mineral lakes

Salt pans are shallow basins where seawater or brine evaporates to leave salt deposits.

They may be natural depressions in coastal or desert areas, or constructed pools for commercial salt harvesting.

The term also refers to the encrusted flats left behind: We drove across the salt pans of the Bonneville flats.

A salt pan can also be a pan used for evaporating brine.
