giant sloth

Enormous extinct mammal

Giant sloths were massive ground-dwelling mammals that lived in the Americas until roughly 10,000 years ago.

Unlike their small tree-dwelling descendants, giant sloths walked on the ground and could reach sizes comparable to elephants.

Some species stood on hind legs to browse trees.

Their extinction coincided with human arrival in the Americas.
