rocksalt

Coarse winter mineral

Rock salt is salt in its natural crystalline form, mined from underground deposits rather than evaporated from seawater.

The coarse crystals are used to de-ice roads in winter, to make ice cream in old-fashioned churns, and as a finishing salt in cooking: They spread rock salt on the icy sidewalk.
