rockburst

Sudden rock failure

A rockburst is a sudden, violent failure of rock in underground mines or tunnels, where highly stressed rock explosively fractures and ejects into the excavation.

Rockbursts pose serious dangers to miners and can damage equipment and structures.

They occur most often in deep mines where pressure from overlying rock is intense: Three workers were injured in the rockburst.
