river rat

Riverside rough character

A river rat is someone who lives along or works on a river, especially in a rough or informal capacity—boatmen, fishermen, or people dwelling in riverside shanties.

The term carries a scrappy, working-class connotation: He grew up a river rat on the Mississippi.

It can also refer to the muskrat or nutria, rodents that inhabit riverbanks.
