logjams
Timber river pileups
Logjams are accumulations of logs that block a river or stream, preventing water and other logs from flowing freely.
The word extends naturally to any situation where progress is blocked by congestion or accumulated obstacles: a logjam of legislation in Congress, traffic logjams during rush hour.
To break a logjam is to resolve a deadlock.
