fish ladder

Upstream migration structure

A fish ladder is a series of ascending pools built alongside a dam or waterfall, allowing fish to bypass the obstacle during migration.

The stepped design lets fish leap from pool to pool, moving upstream to spawning grounds: Salmon use the fish ladder to reach their breeding waters.

Also called a fishway.
