canal barges

Narrow boat vessels

Canal barges are flat-bottomed boats designed to navigate narrow inland waterways.

Built long and shallow to fit through locks and under low bridges, they traditionally carried freight along canal systems during the Industrial Revolution.

Today many serve as houseboats or pleasure craft: They spent a week on a canal barge in the English countryside.
