Ringtones are the sounds a phone makes to signal an incoming call.
Before mobile phones, landlines had mechanical bells; cell phones introduced customizable audio clips.
A ringtone might be a simple chime, a snippet of a song, or any sound file: I set my ringtone to the theme from The Office.
The term extends to notification sounds for texts and apps.
