verbal memory
Remembering spoken information
Verbal memory is the capacity to encode, store, and retrieve information presented in words—whether spoken or written.
It encompasses remembering conversations, lists, names, and text.
Psychologists distinguish it from visual or spatial memory: Her verbal memory is excellent, but she struggles to remember faces.
The term appears frequently in cognitive testing and discussions of learning differences.
