ridings

Canadian voting districts

Ridings is the plural of riding, an administrative division—most familiar from the three historic ridings of Yorkshire (North, East, West).

Canada preserves the term for electoral districts: She represents a rural riding in Ontario.

The word comes from an Old Norse term meaning "third part," though modern ridings aren't necessarily thirds of anything.
