luminol

Forensic glow chemical

Luminol is a chemical compound that emits a blue glow when it reacts with blood, even blood that has been cleaned or diluted.

Crime scene investigators spray luminol in darkened rooms to reveal bloodstains invisible to the naked eye: The luminol revealed a trail of blood leading to the basement.

The reaction works because iron in hemoglobin catalyzes the oxidation that produces the glow.
