redshank

Leggy shore bird

A redshank is a wading bird of Eurasian mudflats and marshes, named for its bright orange-red legs.

The common redshank has brownish plumage and a distinctive white wing stripe visible in flight.

Historically, redshank was also a derogatory term for Scottish Highlanders and Irish people, referring to their bare, weather-reddened legs.
