knotweed

Bamboo-like garden pest

Knotweed is any of several plants with jointed stems and small flowers, named for the swollen nodes along their stalks.

Japanese knotweed is notoriously invasive, spreading aggressively through underground rhizomes and capable of damaging foundations and pavement: The knotweed had taken over the entire back fence.

Once established, it's extremely difficult to eradicate.
