redpoll

Crimson-capped songbird

A redpoll is a small finch with a red patch on its forehead, found in northern regions of Europe, Asia, and North America.

Redpolls frequent birch and alder woods, feeding on seeds, and often visit feeders in winter when they move south in flocks.

The name combines the red marking with poll, an old word for head.
