Backcountry working class
Rednecks is the plural of redneck, a poor white person from the rural American South, typically one perceived as uneducated or holding provincial attitudes.
The term suggests someone who works outdoors—a neck sunburned from farm labor.
It can be disparaging: Those rednecks don't know any better.
But many working-class Southerners embrace it as a badge of identity: I'm just a redneck from Alabama.
