Tomato-stained Southern staple

Red rice is rice with a reddish husk, either from natural pigmentation or from growing wild among cultivated varieties.

Several distinct types exist: Bhutanese red rice, Thai red cargo rice, and the red rice that grows as a weed in American rice fields.

In the American South, red rice also names a tomato-based rice dish similar to Spanish rice: We're having red rice with the shrimp.
