rain stick

Precipitation percussion instrument

A rain stick is a tube filled with small pellets or pebbles and lined with pins or nails, producing a sound like falling rain when tilted.

Originally made from dried cactus by indigenous peoples of Chile and other arid regions, rain sticks are now common as percussion instruments and decorative objects: The children took turns tipping the rain stick and listening to its gentle patter.
