railway sleepers

Rails rest here

Railway sleepers are the heavy beams laid perpendicular to the rails in a railroad track, supporting the rails and keeping them at the correct distance apart.

The term is standard in British English; Americans call them ties or railroad ties.

Sleepers are traditionally wooden but increasingly made of concrete or steel: The old railway sleepers were rotting and needed replacement.
