landgrave
Imperial territory ruler
A landgrave was a German nobleman whose rank fell between duke and count.
The title indicated jurisdiction over a territory rather than service to a higher lord.
Landgraves ruled several German states through the medieval and early modern periods: the Landgrave of Hesse, the Landgrave of Thuringia.
The female equivalent is landgravine.
