cross-protection

Shared defensive immunity

Cross-protection is immunity to one disease or pathogen that results from exposure to a related one.

A mild virus strain may confer cross-protection against a more dangerous relative: Cowpox provided cross-protection against smallpox.

The term appears in immunology, plant pathology, and vaccine research, where cross-protection between strains determines how broadly a vaccine works.
