porte-cochere
Sheltered entrance passage
A porte-cochere is a covered entrance large enough for vehicles to pass through, allowing passengers to board or alight sheltered from weather.
The structure projects from a building's entrance, supported by columns or pillars.
Hotels, hospitals, and grand residences often feature them: The limousine pulled into the porte-cochere.
Sometimes called a carriage porch.
