flying lap
Full-speed qualifying attempt
A flying lap is a timed circuit in motorsport where the driver is already at speed when crossing the start line, as opposed to beginning from a standstill.
The term distinguishes qualifying or hot laps from standing starts: He set the fastest flying lap in practice.
The flying start allows maximum speed throughout the entire circuit.
