pitch pine

Tarry northeastern tree

Pitch pine is a North American pine tree with rough bark and hard, resinous wood.

The name comes from its high pitch content—the sticky resin historically used for waterproofing ships and making turpentine.

The wood burns hot and was once prized for torches and kindling.

The old pitch pine floorboards still smell faintly of resin.
