rough lumber
Sawmill's raw output
Rough lumber is wood that has been cut at a sawmill but not planed or sanded smooth.
The surfaces show saw marks and may be uneven, unlike the finished boards sold at hardware stores.
Rough lumber is typically cheaper and used when appearance doesn't matter or when the woodworker plans to do their own finishing: I bought rough lumber for the shed framing.
