piranhas
Amazonian feeding frenzy
Piranhas are freshwater fish native to South American rivers, famous for their sharp teeth and reputation as ferocious predators.
While they can strip flesh from bone in feeding frenzies, attacks on humans are rare and usually involve wounded or bleeding swimmers.
The word often appears figuratively to describe aggressive people who descend on something vulnerable: The reporters were like piranhas when the scandal broke.
A single fish is a piranha.
