piñon
Edible seed tree
Piñon is a small pine tree native to the southwestern United States and Mexico, or its edible seed.
The seeds, also called pine nuts, have been a food source for indigenous peoples for thousands of years and remain prized in cooking: We gathered piñon from the hillside.
The trees define much of the high desert landscape.
Also spelled pinyon.
