Phantom of the Opera
Disfigured opera haunter
Phantom of the Opera is a 1910 French novel by Gaston Leroux about a disfigured musical genius who haunts the Paris Opera House and becomes obsessed with a young soprano.
The story has been adapted many times, most famously as Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical, one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history.
The phantom's half-mask has become an iconic image of theater itself.
