phantom pains
Missing limb sensations
Phantom pains are sensations of pain felt in a body part that has been amputated or lost.
The brain continues to receive signals as if the limb were still present: Years after losing his leg, he still felt phantom pains in his missing foot.
The term extends to any lingering hurt from something no longer there—a lost relationship, a former home, an abandoned dream.
