Phantom Menace

Ghostly lurking danger

Phantom Menace is the title of the 1999 Star Wars film, the first of the prequel trilogy.

The phrase itself means a threatening force that proves illusory or nonexistent—a danger that looms but isn't quite real.

Outside Star Wars contexts, it's used for any hyped threat that fails to materialize: The Y2K bug turned out to be a phantom menace.
