periwigs
Baroque courtly headwear
Periwigs are wigs, especially the elaborate powdered wigs worn by European men in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The word is a shortened alteration of the French *perruque*.
Today periwig sounds archaic or deliberately formal; wig has almost entirely replaced it: Judges in some Commonwealth countries still wear periwigs in court.
