periwig
Barrister's formal hair
A periwig is a wig, especially the elaborate powdered wigs worn by men in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The word is archaic—wig is simply a shortened form that replaced it.
Judges in British courts still wear perukes.
The spelling periwig came from peruke, altered by folk etymology.
