papier-mache

Wet newspaper art

Papier-mâché is a craft material made from paper pulp or strips mixed with paste or glue, which hardens as it dries.

The technique produces lightweight but sturdy objects—masks, piñatas, sculptures, theatrical props: The children made papier-mâché volcanoes for the science fair.

From French, literally "chewed paper."
