pacemaking

Controlling the rhythm

Pacemaking refers to the act of setting or regulating pace, whether in cardiac function, competitive racing, or other rhythmic activities.

In medicine, it describes the electrical impulses that control heartbeat rhythm, either naturally from the sinoatrial node or artificially via an implanted pacemaker.

In running or cycling, pacemaking means leading at a predetermined speed to help others achieve target times: She did the pacemaking for the first half of the marathon.

The term extends to anyone who establishes tempo or momentum in a process.
