Provençal throwing game
Pétanque is a French ball game in which players toss or roll metal balls toward a small wooden target ball called a cochonnet.
Similar to Italian bocce, pétanque is played on dirt or gravel, typically in casual outdoor settings: We played pétanque in the village square.
The name comes from a Provençal phrase meaning "feet planted"—players must throw from a stationary position within a small circle.
