overdrafts
Negative bank balances
Overdrafts is the plural of overdraft, which occurs when you withdraw more money from a bank account than it contains.
Banks may cover the shortfall and charge a fee: I got hit with three overdraft fees this month.
An overdraft can also refer to a line of credit that allows such withdrawals: My checking account has overdraft protection.
