overdrafting
Beyond the balance
Overdrafting is withdrawing more money from a bank account than it contains, or more broadly, drawing on any resource beyond its sustainable capacity.
The term appears frequently in discussions of groundwater depletion: Years of overdrafting have lowered the water table dramatically.
Banks charge fees for overdrafting checking accounts.
