out-and-back

There and back

Out-and-back describes a route that goes to a destination and returns the same way, rather than forming a loop.

Common in hiking, running, and cycling: It's a six-mile out-and-back trail to the waterfall.

The term often appears as a noun: We did an out-and-back along the coast.
