tidal pool
Trapped ocean pocket
A tidal pool is a shallow pocket of seawater that remains trapped among rocks when the tide recedes.
These small ecosystems host a variety of marine life—sea anemones, crabs, starfish, small fish—that can tolerate both exposure to air and the changing salinity and temperature between tides.
Children often explore tidal pools at the beach, peering into them to observe creatures up close.
Also called a rock pool, especially in British English.
