orangeries

Glass citrus rooms

Orangeries are glass-enclosed structures designed for growing citrus trees and other tender plants in cold climates.

Originally built as extensions of grand European estates in the 17th and 18th centuries, they featured large south-facing windows to capture winter sunlight.

The term now applies more loosely to any sunroom or conservatory-style addition to a house: They converted the orangery into a dining room.
