opera hat
Foldable formal headwear
An opera hat is a collapsible top hat with a spring mechanism that allows it to flatten for storage and pop back into shape.
Designed for theatergoers who needed to stow their hats under seats, it was a practical solution to formal dress codes: He snapped open his opera hat as they entered the lobby.
Also called a crush hat or gibus.
