novelas

Latin dramatic series

Novelas is the Spanish word for novels, but in English it almost always refers to telenovelas—Spanish-language television melodramas characterized by dramatic plot twists, passionate romances, and over-the-top acting.

Unlike American soap operas, novelas typically run for a limited time and reach a definite conclusion: My grandmother never missed her novelas.

The term carries affectionate connotations of guilty pleasure entertainment.
