theatrical releases
Big-screen openings
Theatrical releases are films distributed to movie theaters for public screening, as opposed to those released directly to streaming platforms, television, or home video.
The term distinguishes traditional cinema distribution from other formats: The studio delayed the theatrical release to build buzz.
A film's theatrical release often determines its cultural prestige and awards eligibility.
