nor'easter

Atlantic seaboard cyclone

A nor'easter is a powerful storm along the eastern coast of North America, named for the strong winds that blow from the northeast.

These storms bring heavy snow, rain, and coastal flooding, particularly in New England and the Mid-Atlantic: Schools closed ahead of the nor'easter.

Also spelled northeaster.
