non-nutritive
Without food value
Non-nutritive describes something that provides no nutritional value—no calories, vitamins, or minerals that the body can use.
The term appears most often in discussions of sweeteners: non-nutritive sweeteners like aspartame or stevia provide sweetness without calories.
Babies engage in non-nutritive sucking when they suck a pacifier or thumb for comfort rather than food.
