pacifier
Baby's sucking substitute
A pacifier is a rubber or silicone nipple given to babies to suck on for comfort.
The sucking motion soothes infants without feeding them.
Called a dummy in British English.
Figuratively, a pacifier is anything that calms or quiets: The tax cut was a pacifier for angry voters.
