soother

What calms distress

A soother is something that calms or comforts.

In Canadian and some British usage, a soother is a baby's pacifier—the rubber nipple given to infants to suck on: The baby dropped her soother.

More generally, anything that soothes qualifies: Music was her soother after long days.
